Punjab University turns 140. PU global ranking


Punjab University has completed its 140 years of establishment as the varsity was established on October 14, 1882.

Punjab University is the oldest ‘teaching’ university of the sub-continent which has produced two Nobel laureate and provided human resource in all the sections of the society.

PU has the largest alumni body who are spread all over the world.

On its 140th anniversary, deans of various faculties, heads of departments, employees and students called on Vice Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmad Akhtar at his office an congratulated him.

The participants of the gathering lauded the role of PU VC Prof Niaz Ahmad Akhtar for uplifting the international ranking of Punjab University and restructuring the institution in order to meet the demands of next 50 years.

They said that in 2018, when Dr Niaz assumed the charge as Vice Chancellor, the PU had 13 faculties, 10 constituent colleges, 73 departments / centers / institutes which were not adequate for the present educational needs.

Keeping in view the needs of the country for the next fifty years, they said, Dr Niaz started work to adapt the structure of all faculties and departments to the modern educational and research needs, as a result of which the number of faculties has increased from 13 to 19 and the number departments has increased from 83 to 150.

They said that the incumbent administration has taken several steps to increase the university’s ranking and promote research culture.


As a result, in the last four years PU’s international ranking had improved manifold as it was counted among top 78 percent universities of the world and now it has been ranked among top 57 percent universities.

They appreciated that for the first time in the history of Punjab University the 15 subjects had been ranked internationally and PU has been ranked world’s top 100-150 institutions in the subject of Petroleum Engineering while top 100 to 130 institutions worldwide in religious studies.

They said that Punjab University has also improved its Asian ranking and it stands 232nd in 2018 in QS ranking.

They said that in just four years, PU has improved its Asian ranking by 87 points and now it is 145th best university in Asia. The Nature Publishing Group, a world-class publisher of high impact scientific and medical information in print and online founded in 1869, has also ranked Punjab University No 1 in terms of research publications in the field of natural sciences amongst all Pakistani universities, they further added.

The participants said that PU was playing its role in the promotion of higher education in the country and the progress made in the last four years under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmad Akhtar was commendable.
