A judicial magistrate on Wednesday indicted an actress Saba Qamar and singer Bilal Saeed in a last year case of alleged desecration of Wazir Khan Masjid.
Both the perpetrators who were present before court denied the allegations and decided to contest the trial.
The magistrate directed the prosecution to present its witnesses on October 14.
Akbari Gate police had lodged a case against the duo under section 295 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) following a court’s direction to act on an application of a lawyer as per law and decide whether a cognizable offence was made out. This law provision deals with the offence of injuring or defiling a place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class.
Complaint counsel said that the culprits trampled upon the sanctity of the mosque by their act which also sparked an outrage among the citizens. He asserted that both artists could not be allowed to disgrace a worship place.
Defence counsel in reply said that the FIR was baseless and contrary to the facts. He submitted that no dance or music took place at the mosque as alleged in the FIR.
He claimed that both artists were innocent and falsely implicated in the case for ulterior motives. He requested to acquit both the artists from the charges.
A session court had confirmed bail of both the accused on September 3, 2020.
