The Old Anarkali police arrested a lawyer Majid Jahangir who ransacked the Lahore High Court LHC Copy branch allegedly to protest delay in issuance of attested copy of an order.
The police lodged a case of the incident against Majid Jahangir under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 440 (mischief committed after preparation made for causing death or hurt), 506B (criminal intimidation) of Pakistan Penal Code. The police also booked the lawyer section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 in the case.
On Wednesday, Majid Jahangir entered in copy branch with a big iron club and started smashing glass of the counters. He threatened the staff members by shouting, ‘Do not interfere in it as it’s a matter of lawyers.’
A video of the incident widely circulated on social media shows that Majid Jahangir warned everyone including a policeman present on the scene to stay away and not become a party in what he was doing. After smashing all the counters of glass and left the branch.
Later LHC security personnel arrested him and handed over to the police.
Taking notice of this sad incident, Punjab Bar Council, the provincial regulatory body of lawyers, suspended the legal practicing licence of Majid Jahangir and referred the matter to a tribunal for cancellation of the licence. In his video message, the council’s vice chairman Farhan Shahzad condemned the incident saying the act of an individual lawyer brought a bad name to the whole legal fraternity and it could not be tolerated.
Lahore High Court Bar Association, while condemning the incident, suspended the membership of Majid Jahangir and also restricted his entry to the bar.
