Pak’s envoy in Vienna lauds IAEA for peaceful use of nuclear energy

VIENNA: Ambassador Aftab Ahmad Khokher delivered a statement at the ongoing meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.

Delegations of Pakistan and Kazakhstan also held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 65th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.

While the Pakistan delegation was led by Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Muhammad Naeem, the Kazakh side was led by Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Mr. Akan Rakhmetullin.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Aftab Ahmad Khokher, also participated in the meeting. Pakistan’s side requested Kazakhstan’s support for Pakistan’s membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

The two heads of the delegation exchanged souvenirs at the end of the meeting.

Also, Chairman Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission addresses Muhammad Naeem addressed the annual General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), presently being held in Vienna.

He said that Pakistan strongly supported the Agency’s role in promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear technology in accordance with its motto “Atom for Peace and Development”.

He recalled that Pakistan had achieved another milestone with the inauguration of its sixth and the largest nuclear power plant of ‘1100 megawatts, Karachi Nuclear Power Plant K-2. Another such power plant K-3 is expected to become operational in April 2022.

Pakistan is among the founding members of the IAEA and regularly serves on its Board of Governors. It has not only benefitted from but also contributed to the Agency’s technical cooperation programme over the years aimed at promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
