Punjab Bar Council announces strike against Justice Ayesha’s proposed appointment

The Punjab Bar Council (PBC) gave a call for a strike throughout the province on September 9 to protest against the proposed elevation of a junior judge of Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Ayesha A Malik to the Supreme Court.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the council also condemned the passage of the bill by the National Assembly regarding amendments in the Legal Practitioners & Bar Council Act 1973.

According to the PBC vice-chairman, some amendments were made in the law which is against the basic structure of the Constitution and gross violation of the parliamentary norms and democratic principles. The vice-chairman asked the lawyers of Punjab to participate in a convention being held in Islamabad on September 9.

The judicial commission is also scheduled to discuss the elevation of Justice Ayesha A Malik, who is fourth in the seniority of the LHC judges.
