Pakistan observes mourning day to pay tribute to Syed Ali Geelani


President Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed deep grief and sorrow over the death of Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani and announced that the Pakistan flag would fly at half-mast today (Thursday) that would also be observed a day of official mourning.

The PM in his tweets said Ali Geelani struggled all his life for his people and their right to self-determination. Imran Khan said Ali Geelani suffered incarceration and torture by the Occupying Indian state but remained resolute.

The PM in another tweet saluted Ali Geelani from Pakistani nation and said he would be remembered in his own words “Hum Pakistani Hain aur Pakistan Hamara hai”.


Pro-Pakistan Kashmiri Syed Ali Shah Geelani died at the age of 92 at his home in Srinagar late on Wednesday evening. The was the most prominent voice against exposing India’s brutal military rule in Occupied Kashmir. The funeral took place this morning.

In March 2018, he suffered a minor heart attack and was hospitalised.

“Saddened by the news of Geelani sahab’s passing away. We may not have agreed on most things but I respect him for his steadfastness & standing by his beliefs. May Allah Ta’aala grant him jannat & condolences to his family & well wishers,” former Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti has tweeted.

Hurriyat Conference chairman and eminent Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Gilani has passed away. He spent his entire life in the struggle for Kashmir’s independence.

Security has been strengthened in Kashmir Valley following his death late on Wednesday evening.

Restrictions, including suspension of internet services, have been imposed in Kashmir Valley, said Vijay Kumar, a senior police officer in Kashmir. Security has also been strengthened outside Mr Geelani’s house in Hyderpora.

Some senior members of Hurriyat have been detained. Senior Hurriyat leader Mukhtar Ahmed Waza has been arrested from his residence in South Kashmir’s Anantnag town.

Syed Ali Gilani was in house custody and has been ill for several months, but the Indian government has not provided him with any medical treatment.

The late was a staunch supporter of Pakistan and a proponent of Pakistan’s accession. Some time ago, he split from Jamaat-e-Islami and formed a new party called Tahreek Hurriyat Kashmir.

Ali Gilani’s struggle and long service will always be remembered. He was a mountain of all-round determination and determination. All Indian attempts to subdue him failed in every age and death embraced him. He was known as a brave and courageous leader. After the martyrdom of Mirwaiz Maulana Muhammad Farooq, Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone, he was a ray of hope and light for Kashmiris.

He was awarded the High Civil Award ‘NISHAN PAKISTAN’ by the Government of Pakistan. The void created by his death will probably never be filled.

May Allah place the deceased in His mercy and encourage his family and Kashmiris to bear this trauma. Ameen.
